When “life happens” it can be tempting to throw in the towel; back down, or just plain give up. This can show up in many forms. It may look like “settling”, pretending it was never really that important, or simply quietly burying a dream. Often times all you really need is a little retreat to rest and regroup. But ironically it’s at the moment of defeat, or after a big let down, that we feel the least able to let ourselves off the hook with some kindness and self-care.
I often talk about self-care. It’s essential to remaining vital, vibrant, creative and productive. I’m not talking about bubble baths and massages here, (although both are wonderful and much appreciated!) What I’m referring to is caring for your body and soul, and nourishing yourself mentally, emotionally and creatively. This will allow you to endure the setbacks that are inevitable in life, and to build and grow over the long run. It is important to keep going and never give up.
5 great tips when you feel as if you need to quit
1. Remind yourself why you’re doing it
It’s easy to lose the sense while coping with modern life. If you feel like giving up, think about the reasons why you’re taking action. Write your answers down because words are very powerful and writing gives them more force.
2. Take a break
If you feel you’re overwhelmed or you’re losing motivation, just take a rest to reflect. It’s necessary for your body as well as for your mind. A rest doesn’t mean you’re not active. Try some relaxation techniques like yoga, muscle relaxation or simply a walk. Also remember to take care of your body, eating healthy, drink lots of water and getting enough sleep.
3. Switch it up
It’s not enjoyable to do the same things over and over again. If you can’t change the whole activity, simply improve it. Go running in a different location, try new exercises, a new recipe, or change the design in your office. Do your best to avoid getting stuck in a routine.
4. Notice that success doesn’t come easy
If we look at people who have already succeeded, we sometimes forget about how long it took them to get their and the hard work behind it. They also have started from setting goals first and created routines on their daily lives to support their long-term goals. Success never comes easy so have faith in yourself and continue to take small steps to make your dreams real.
5. Talk about it with others
We all need a little bit of support from our families and friends. They can provide us with a piece of good advice and help us to feel better. You can also consider contacting a professional coach to work on your motivation and engagement.
We’ve all had bad days when…
- The car broke down
- A client cancelled
- People didn’t show
- Everyone said no
- Your wallet got stolen
- Your best friend lied
- When we were tired, hurt, scared, discouraged, out of patience, low on money or feeling just “not enough”.
It happens. The remedy while partly is perseverance, is always easier when married with self-care.
I’m not going to give you the pep talk here with something about it always being darkest just before daylight. (or however that goes!) But the truth is, everything you’ve worked for, all the time and money you've spent on education, self-growth, and building your life to the point it’s at today is lost the moment you decide to quit.
If you’re at that place, feeling like your back is against the wall, it’s simply time for a break and a little self-care. A couple of years ago I took an entire year off as a hiatus. It was by far the single best thing I have ever done in my life. I grew as a person in ways I don’t think I could have staying at home. I felt filled up and nourished with an enormous new capacity for creativity. Since then, my business has also grown in leaps and bounds, and it just wouldn’t have been possible without the self-care.
So this week, if only for an hour or a day, let yourself off the hook. Retreat, rest and regroup. You deserve it, and ultimately, it creates space for new and wonderful things to take place!
