One of the many fascinations in life for many people is that of the connection between the Mind and Body. In my opinion they intertwine, yet each factor is part of a much wider, holistic system. That ultimately makes it impossible to change one without affecting the other.
Only a few decades ago the idea that Mind and Body could so powerfully influence each other would've seemed preposterous, because conventional models of science and medicine took a much more 'mechanistic' approach to the human body. It was believed that humans were nothing more than very advanced, biological 'machines', made up of a series of interconnecting parts and processes, each of which had little to no relevance to the others. And Consciousness - well, that didn't even enter the mix.
In recent years more and more research is proving what we've all intuitively known for a long time – what goes on in our mind can and does have massive implications on the nature and state of our physical body.
Although we are still in the process of understanding the multitude of mechanisms through which this internal communication takes place – the fairly recent discovery of substances called 'neurotransmitters' goes some way to providing answers.
These neurotransmitter chemicals literally flood our body, facilitating constant bio-chemical communication between our brain, nervous system, and literally every cell and organ. Quite literally, at every second the Mind is communicating with every single cell within us, telling it how to behave, and how to respond to our wider internal and external environment. Pretty fascinating, huh?!
Well that's not all: You've heard about the 'neurones' present in our brain? These are special cells that transmit information through electrical and chemical signals, from one part of the brain to the next. For a very long time we believed these neurones were only present in the brain, because of the complex tasks they carry out.
Though it's now been discovered that you have over 40,000 neurones in your Heart, and over 100 million inside your gut! This realisation is so profound, that leading scientists have literally dubbed these organs the second and third 'brains'. Although we still understand the bare minimum about how this (extremely complex) communication system works, it does raise some interesting insights. For one – has Humankind always intuitively known these things? Remember to 'Follow your heart' we've been told, and 'trust your gut feeling’. Understanding the deep, interconnected relationship between Mind, Body and the wider nervous system creates greater clarity about the vast number of cases of people who've cured themselves of illnesses – sometimes terminal illnesses – even after conventional doctors had given up hope.
Very often meditation – a process of consistent re-programming of the Mind to a much calmer, clearer state of functioning (so that the Body can do what it does naturally, and heal) – is cited in scientific journals as a powerful aspect of this process.
So what about those of us who want to experience powerful 'shifts' in our state of Mind, Body and Emotions?
When it comes to the process of continual positive change like that experienced in NLP Life Success Coaching – we are literally walked through, step by step, our own journey of positive psychological emotional and physical transformation.
Our limiting beliefs can be brought to the light of day and resolved, our values deeply aligned, and our unconscious blueprint for happiness, well-being and success can be positively programmed, clarified and strengthened – all as we move closer and closer to our life goals and aspirations.
A little experiment for you …
The next time you find yourself in a situation where you lack confidence, or don't feel like you have all of the resources you need to effectively deal with a tricky boss or colleague, a challenging friend, or situation that feels outside of your control:
Take a pause, breathe deeply and powerfully, and recall a time in your life when you felt super confident, strong and in control.
As you bring that situation to life in your mind, deliberately adjust your posture – stand up tall and straight, start to move with purpose, and adjust you breathing and your movements to become deliberate, calm and strong.
After a few minutes of carrying out these steps, and remaining in this new state, respond to your external challenge, and notice what happens...
Nothing but positive, life-affirming suggestions can have any lasting effect (thanks to millions of years of evolution in this direction!). Hopefully all of this offers you a glimpse into the intricate, interconnected nature of the Mind-Body system – and the power that harnessing this relationship can have in your own personal development journey...
And interestingly, because Mind and Body are each parts of a wider system, it's also true that we can begin to change our thinking patterns by adapting the way we move, walk, and carry ourselves.
